Morchard Bishop Village History

The history of Morchard can be traced back to Celtic times and archaeological excavations have revealed an Iron Age settlement in the N West, while the farm Harestreet in the East testifies to its Saxon past. Quern stones and flint tools have been turned up in fields. Land was “enclosed” probably as early as the 1300s, creating many small farms (mainly dairy) and several hamlets.

Lighting up the Village Skyline

St Mary’s Church in Morchard Bishop is a breathtaking sight, especially at night when its towering structure is illuminated against the dark sky. Perched on a hill, this historic church becomes a glowing beacon, visible for miles around, casting a sense of peace and timelessness over the surrounding Devon countryside.

The church, dating back to the 15th century, boasts a striking 85-foot tower that dominates the skyline. When bathed in golden light after sunset, its intricate stonework and elegant architecture take on an almost ethereal quality. The warm glow highlights the centuries-old craftsmanship, from the detailed carvings to the strong, weathered walls that have stood the test of time.

For villagers and travelers alike, the illuminated St Mary’s Church serves as both a landmark and a source of comfort. Whether seen from afar while driving along the winding country roads or glimpsed from the heart of the village, its presence is a reminder of the deep history and community spirit that define Morchard Bishop. On misty evenings, the church appears to float above the landscape, its light piercing through the fog like a guardian watching over the valley below.

Bellringing

Meeting every Thursday at St Mary’s, the Improvers Group is a mixture of people, seasoned ringers with many years experience, all the way through to newcomers who have only taken up the challenge in the last year or so.

It’s a very sociable group, everyone encouraging each other, sometimes getting it right, other times not, but under the guideance of Trainer and Conductor Bob Robinson we’re improving all the time.

Services

The Church has always been a central part of village life – for our Sunday services, family gatherings, weddings, baptisms, funerals and bellringing.

The church is open every day for your prayers and all are welcome inside for a chance to have a few moments peace and solitude in our busy world.

St Mary’s At The Community’s Heart (SMATCH)

The Parochial Church Council and local residents have now set up St Mary’s At The Community’s Heart (SMATCH), which has begun fundraising for the expected £250,000 costs of repairs to the building, re-hanging of the church bells, installing a toilet and small kitchen area and enabling more community use and the installation of an under-gallery and exhibition space.

A Community Survey has been started and it is hoped that more people will get behind the appeal by giving donations or helping fundraise.

Grants are to be applied for and donations would be welcomed.  If you can help, please email Wendy Vere at: r.vere@btconnect.com .
